Dr. Knafo will present a two-part lecture on advanced technology, AI, and the new sexual landscape. In the first part, she will introduce the topic of artificial intelligence by proposing that algorithms are the new unconscious. She will offer a psychoanalytic understanding of why we create AI and discuss the challenges to remaining human in the age of AI. She will offer an example of dream interpretation using AI, illustrating the growing abilities AI is developing in the therapy arena.

Dr. Knafo’s second talk will address how sex and technology partner for pleasure, novelty, transcendence, and perversion. She argues that the Internet and AI have enabled the creation of an alternative adult world of sex dolls and sex robots, cybersex, teledildonics, sexting, catfishing, internet porn, and more in the widespread deployment of omnipotent fantasy. Knafo will discuss her own clinical and professional journey through the massive sea change taking place in what she calls “the new sexual landscape.” She will offer several clinical vignettes, including one of a man who loved a synthetic doll, to illustrate the connection between technology and sexuality.

Danielle Knafo, PhD is a clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst, a professor and author. Currently she is faculty and supervisor at NYU’s Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis and Adelphi’s Postgraduate Programs. Dr. Knafo is a popular lecturer and prolific writer. She has written 10 books and dozens of articles and art essays. Her areas of expertise are: art and creativity, trauma and psychosis, sex and gender, and, recently, technology and AI. Just a few titles demonstrate her range and interdisciplinary approach: Egon Schiele: The Creation of a Self; In Her own Image: Women’s Self-Representation in Twentieth-Century Art; Living with Terror: Working with Trauma; Dancing with the Unconscious: The Art of Psychoanalysis and the Psychoanalysis of Art; The Age of Perversion: Desire and Technology in Art and Psychoanalysis; The New Sexual Landscape and Contemporary Psychoanalysis. This article is an inquiry into the role of smartphones in shifting the dynamics of human relationships as we have traditionally known them. I reimagine the Oedipus Complex to account for the company we keep in the digital age – the smartphones that have become ubiquitous inhabitants of our interpersonal world. Specifically, I focus on triangular relational configurations that now include smart devices as the new “third,” the ever-present “digital objects” that serve as points at which two human beings meet. After providing two clinical illustrations, I conclude that we are increasingly headed toward an interpersonal age of digital objects that will serve to artificially connect people more than ever, and simultaneously distance people in terms of in-person human connection. I am proposing that these relational dynamics will ultimately serve to loosen the primal, instinctual affective ties that have served to bind human beings together since the beginning of time.

Dear SPPP/Division 39 Folks,

I've been struggling with what to say to you in response to this historic and horrific week in which the very nature of the world in which we live in is being transformed on a daily basis. I feel an obligation to speak, not because my voice, or even that of our Society, is especially important, but because I believe that each of us needs to do what we can to say "no," if only to counter the feelings of helplessness, hopelessness, anxiety, and despair that many of us feel.

I have been thinking this week of all those under concerted attack by those who now have power, including among our members and among those we serve. In particular, I've been thinking of Trans and other LGBTQ+ folks who face a government attempting to wipe them out of existence. I think of the immigrants terrified of the knock at the door and of the foreign students not sure if they will be able to finish their education. I think of the BIPOC folks and of women, who know that the attack on DEI is an attack on their attempts to become equal participants in US society. I've thought of Palestinians, Arabs, and Muslims who have experienced treatment as outsiders who don't belong in a "Christian" America. I've thought of the Jews facing the sight of the richest man in the world, and a major influence on our government, proudly making a Nazi salute on national TV and knowing that when authoritarians come for others, they usually go after Jews as well. And I've thought of the academics and scientists who are being told that they are the among enemy, no longer to be allowed to use their expertise to improve society. And tomorrow I will think of new targets of the wave of hate sweeping through our country while continually thinking of all the children who are in danger of having their future robbed if those in power fail to reverse our climate catastrophe.

And I haven't forgotten those conservatives who have seen their movement abandon the values of rule-of-law, the importance of social order and support for international institutions while seeing it turned into a vehicle of chaos, revenge, and destruction premised on an ever-expanding claim of victimization. While we may not all agree about political ideology, as helping professionals we all believe in the sanctity of all people, including those different than us, and an ethic of helping and understanding.

The new forces taking over our country emphasize the differences among us while seeking to extrude those viewed as different from the social community. Many of those now being extruded have fought long and hard to be included in our society and have only recently achieved some success. We must not let the new authoritarians stop or reverse this tentative progress. Like other authoritarian movements, they seek a homogenous "us" as opposed to the multitude of dangerous "others." They command us to bend our knees, and our minds to whatever the powerful proclaim. This is antithetical to our values as psychoanalysts. Our beloved psychoanalysis is premised on the opposite: love of truth even if it’s painful, celebration of difference even if it’s foreign, and the aspiration to unite these through love.

I'm also thinking of the dangers to our work as psychoanalysts and psychoanalytic psychotherapists from the currents sweeping the country. We know that our therapy requires a degree of calm so that we, patients and therapists, can listen to the quiet whisperings from the unconscious and nurture our introspective capacities. We know that self-understanding helps us and those with whom we work control our destructive tendencies and channel them, imperfectly of course, in constructive directions. What we offer has long been under threat from those emphasizing behavior and conscious cognitions over unconscious mental processes, often in the name of cost savings and efficiency. Now we are witnessing our leaders deliberately unleashing violent impulses to terrorize the population and suppress dissent, the opposite of the introspection, self-knowledge, and constructive engagement we promote.

I know that the psychoanalytic community in general, and our Society in particular, has many tensions, even fissures. I don't want to minimize these differences. They are important and we need to explore and deal with them in the hope of mending or at least reducing the tensions that divide us. I know that in the new environment we are witnessing, divisions among us can reduce our ability to support and help our community and those with whom we work. But as psychoanalysts, we should remember that differences can be a strength if we so choose. I hope that we can constructively work together to protect our values, our professional community, and our patients and others with whom we work. As we do so, we must continue to make sure that the voices and bodies of traditionally marginalized people are at the table as active participants in our work. We need each other. now more than ever. I'm hoping that we can remember that psychoanalysis is committed to truth, constructive cooperation and conflict, and to the victory of love over hate.

The Complexities of Managing Emotional Regulation in Group Therapy

In today’s fast-paced, stressful, and often isolating world, the capacity for emotional regulation is essential. Traditionally viewed as an internal or intrapsychic process within the individual, emotional regulation is increasingly recognized as an interpersonal process, especially within group therapy settings. Group therapy uniquely allows for coregulation—where emotional states are managed between group members and between group members and the facilitator—helping individuals develop the capacity for more effective self-regulation over time.

This presentation will explore emotional regulation through the lens of three major therapeutic approaches: behavioral, psychoanalytic/attachment-focused, and neurobiological perspectives. Attention will be given to the neurobiological mechanisms involved in emotional regulation, including the roles of brain regions such as the prefrontal cortex, amygdala, and hippocampus. Additionally, we will discuss the role of psychopharmacology in supporting emotional regulation, exploring how medications can assist in stabilizing mood and emotional reactivity.

A distinguished panel of experts will present on these varying approaches, followed by two live demonstration groups: Susan Mengden will lead a Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) demonstration group, and Jake Pickard will facilitate a modern analytic process group. These demonstrations will allow participants to directly experience how these therapeutic models operate in fostering emotional regulation. The session will conclude with a large-group discussion aimed at comparing and synthesizing these different approaches.

Dr. Victor M. Gonzalez Jr.

Dr. Victor M. Gonzalez Jr. is a double-boarded adult and geriatric psychiatrist with extensive experience in both clinical practice and academic leadership. He holds an M.D. from the University of Wisconsin and completed his psychiatry residency at the University of Texas Dell Medical School, followed by a geriatric psychiatry fellowship at UT Health San Antonio. Dr. Gonzalez is the owner of Nexus Psychiatry in San Antonio, serves as a psychiatrist at Televero Health, and is a past president of the Bexar County Psychiatric Society. He is passionate about medical education and actively contributes to psychiatric residency training and mentorship.

Susan Mengden, PhD, CGP, CEDS-C

Susan C. Mengden, PhD, Certified Eating Disorder Specialist-iaedp Approved Consultant, and Certified Group Psychotherapist is the Founder and Executive Director of Esperanza Eating Disorders Center in San Antonio, Texas. Mengden has 35 years of clinical experience specializing in eating disorder treatment. She is intensively trained in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Family-Based Treatment (FBT), and Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MSBR).

Jake Pickard, Ph.D.

Jake Pickard is a licensed psychologist and certified group psychotherapist in private practice, working with individuals, couples, and groups. He is a graduate of the Center for Group Studies in New York City, which teaches the modern analytic approach to group therapy. He runs an ongoing modern analytic process group in his private practice. In addition to his private practice, he is an assistant professor within the UIW / TIGMER psychiatry residency, where he is chief of psychotherapy training. He is the current president of SAGPS.

Objectives
By the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:

Identify Core Strategies for Emotional Regulation: Understand and identify several key strategies within behavioral, psychoanalytic/attachment-focused, and neurobiological approaches that facilitate emotional regulation in group therapy.
Explore the Neurobiological Basis of Emotional Regulation: Gain insight into the various brain regions involved in emotional regulation, such as the prefrontal cortex, amygdala, and hippocampus, and understand how these regions interact to modulate emotional responses.
Examine Psychopharmacology Options: Review common psychopharmacological treatments that can support emotional regulation, understanding their mechanisms of action and how they complement therapeutic interventions.
Differentiate Group Therapy Modalities: Clearly articulate the differences between DBT and modern analytic group therapy, highlighting how each modality approaches emotional regulation, group dynamics, and therapeutic goals.
Experience Emotional Regulation in Practice: Participate in live demonstration groups to appreciate both the similarities and differences between DBT and modern analytic approaches in real-time, providing experiential insight into how each model facilitates emotional regulation.
Enhance Therapeutic Practice: Apply concepts of emotional regulation from the behavioral, psychoanalytic, and neurobiological frameworks to clinical practice, integrating psychopharmacology as needed to support individual and group treatment outcomes.
Engage in Reflective Group Learning: Collaborate in a large-group discussion to synthesize the information presented and reflect on how these varied approaches can be used to enhance emotional regulation and group dynamics in clinical practice.

In my first model of unformulated experience (Stern, 1983, 1997), my intention was to study our capacity to reflect on our own experience; and that meant that the boundary between formulated and unformulated experience needed to be defined by verbal language: My first model held that if you can think or speak about a meaning in the reflective terms of verbal language, the meaning is formulated; if you cannot reflect on the meaning in verbal language, the meaning remains unformulated. Now, though, I think of the boundary between formulated and unformulated experience differently. Now I think of it in terms of the degree of personal meaningfulness of unformulated experience: Formulation is a matter of becoming someone for whom the experience in question is meaningful. One crosses the threshold into explicitly meaningful experience when one can accept the meaning in question. If one can accept it, one can use it in the construction of spontaneous, creative living. The formulation of experience is therefore the imaginative transformation of not-me into feels-like-me. The crucial point is not that particular, new experiences are given shape, but that one becomes the new and slightly different person who can shape experience in that new way.

Donnel B. Stern, Ph.D. is Training and Supervising Analyst at the William Alanson White Institute in New York City; and Clinical Professor of Psychology and Clinical Consultant at the NYU Postdoctoral Program in Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy. He is the Founder and Editor of a book series at Routledge, "Psychoanalysis in a New Key,” which has over 80 books in print. He is the former Editor-in-Chief of the journal Contemporary Psychoanalysis. He has published articles and book chapters for over 40 years, and has co-edited four books and authored four others, the most recent of which is The Infinity of the Unsaid: Unformulated Experience, Language, and the Nonverbal (Routledge, 2019). He is in private practice in New York City, where he sees adults and adolescents and leads private study groups.

Discussant

Jon G. Allen, Ph.D., is Clinical Professor on the Voluntary Faculty, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas; an honorary faculty member of the Center for Psychoanalytic Studies; and adjunct faculty of the Institute for Spirituality and Health, Texas Medical Center. He spent 40 years in clinical practice at Menninger Clinic, where he helped to develop an intensive inpatient treatment program for trauma, and created what became a hospital-wide psychoeducational program on recovering from trauma. Now retired from clinical practice, he continues to teach, write, and consult with psychotherapists. He has authored 7 books and numerous journal articles, coauthored 3 books, and co-edited 3 books, focused primarily on trauma, mentalizing, and the patient-therapist relationship. In recent years, Dr. Allen has become interested in relational psychoanalytic concepts and integrated these ideas into his writing, including Stern's model of unformulated experience. Dr. Allen's forthcoming book is Bringing Psychotherapy Back to Life.

Terms such as vitality and authenticity are difficult to define. Moreover, they are not truly psychoanalytic concepts. However, when psychoanalysis attempts to theorize the non-specific aspects of treatment, such as those related to the person of the analyst, it becomes inevitable to refer to them. The thesis of this article is that vitality should be taken out of its vagueness and transformed as much as possible into a precise psychoanalytic concept. This can be done by discussing it in the light of Bion's concept of negative capability and the post-Bionian theory of the analytic field. Every time the analyst rediscovers to her surprise the dreamlike dimension of the session, she becomes more vital and reinvests in the patient, the analysis and the psychoanalytic method. Then, she realizes that she is always a character in the narratives of the analytic conversation and has the chance to try to guess what is happening by relying on her intensified physical or emotional reaction.

What do you want to be when you grow up? This provocative question is the title of one chapter as well as the theme woven throughout Thomas Ogden’s book, Coming to Life in the Consulting Room: Toward a New Analytic Sensibility. While the question seemingly refers to occupational goals, Ogden clarifies that he really means what kind of person/analyst do you want to be now, and what kind of person/analyst do you want to become? Ogden differentiates two general kinds of stances in psychoanalytic thinking and practice: (1) epistemological, which focuses on knowing and understanding, and (2) ontological, focused on being and becoming. As introduced and developed by Freud, Klein, and Fairbairn, epistemological psychoanalysis views the mind as an “apparatus for thinking” and privileges the clinical intervention of transference interpretation to promote insight. Over the past 70 years, there has been a shift in emphasis to ontological psychoanalysis, which is rooted in concepts pioneered by Winnicott (i.e., “going on being” and transitional space/phenomena) and Bion (i.e., reverie and “without memory or desire"). Ontological psychoanalysis conceives of the mind as a living process located in the act of experiencing. The analyst is present with the patient in the act of experiencing, more likely describing what the analyst senses is occurring rather than explaining. The goal is to facilitate the patient’s experience of creatively discovering for themselves, to foster their becoming more fully alive.

Though psychoanalytic interventions inevitably involve intertwined epistemological and ontological aspects, one aspect or the other tends to predominate. Ogden described his own personal journey from an internal object relations orientation, which is an epistemic approach, to a more ontological stance. However, he emphasized that ontological and epistemological psychoanalysis refer to sensibilities and attitudes, not separate schools of psychoanalytic thought or technique. He provides numerous clinical vignettes throughout the book, but does not prescribe specific interventions. He instead suggests that each practitioner must develop their own analytic style and essentially “invent psychoanalysis” for each patient. His book is a collection of previously published papers, which describe and exemplify an ontological stance, and delve into its foundational roots. After summarizing Ogden’s concept and practice of ontological psychoanalysis with online attendees, discussant JoAnn Ponder would like to explore with them why, or why not, this might constitutes wild analysis. So how do we safeguard against a wild analysis? If there is time, Ponder also plans to talk with attendees about the applicability of Ogden's ideas to psychoanalytic supervision.

Presenter

JoAnn Ponder, PhD is a psychologist-psychoanalyst who has a private practice in Austin, Texas, providing adult treatment, couples therapy, and therapy consultation. She completed her training at the Center for Psychoanalytic Studies in Houston, where she formerly served on the faculty. She also completed postgraduate training in infant-parent mental health intervention, Jungian sandplay therapy, object relational family and couples therapy, psychotherapy supervision, and psychoanalytic writing. For the past 3 years, she has served as program chair for the Houston Psychoanalytic Society. JoAnn has presented papers at national and international psychoanalytic conferences and published on a variety of topics. Her clinical papers offer an integrated perspective from various schools of psychoanalytic thought.

Vitality might be considered the essence of aliveness. Louis Sander and Daniel Stern drew our attention to vitality as a core component of human development and psychotherapeutic treatment. They were the most visionary of the first group of infant observation researchers, along with Colwyn Trevarthen. Both were inspired by deep experiences beyond the usual psychoanalytic preoccupations: Sander by spiritual faith, sustained in his passion for the essential principles of living systems; Stern by a lifelong commitment to aesthetics and the arts, especially dance, reflected in his extraordinary eye for the choreography of infant-parent interaction and psychotherapy process. Both were also exceptional researchers and creative, integrative scientists. From these platforms, Sander and Stern broke through crusts that had restrained both developmental psychology and psychoanalysis, reaching toward the sources of human vitality throughout the life cycle. Conference presenter Stephen Seligman will discuss Sander and Stern's foundational findings about the origins, development, and manifestations of vitality, as well as the implications for treatment.

While classical psychoanalysis has taught us much about the passions, less explored are the passionless, often mindless and empty states presented by certain passive patients. In some instances, according to presenter Anne Alvarez, these states may not be the result not of a defensive or aggressive retreat, but of having given up in despair or boredom. Such patients do not seem to be hiding, but lost; not withdrawn, but undrawn. Their internal objects seem to be unvalued rather than devalued and nothing much matters. This may affect curiosity and desire, even the desire to follow a train of thought. Alvarez discusses what might be missing or underdeveloped and ways in which analytic technique may try to address these issues via processes of vitalization.

There also is a relationship between human vitality and sense of time. Presenter Christopher Bonovitz uses Loewald's concept of time in examining the temporal dimension of self states and enactments that emerge in the psychoanalytic situation. This includes looking at the relationship between time and vitality, fragmented and unitary time, and the role of imagination in developing the dyadic capacity to contain linkages between the past, present and future.

We tend to think of language as an abstract system that is imposed upon us from outside. Yet, as Hans Loewald knew, language is also an inner system, one that is learned from particular others in particular lived moments, one that is idiosyncratic and inherently relational. Indeed, every person’s language enacts and conveys the ways that person has experienced the potentials of language for imagining and construing self and world. This deeply personal imagining of self and world is what we encounter when we engage in the therapeutic talking that is psychoanalysis.

In this lecture, I explore the early roots of this imaginative capacity of language in the ways that parents speak with their infants, drawing on empirical infant research to stir our imagination. An exploration of both individual and cultural differences in early language experience enriches our understanding of the meanings that are inherent in psychoanalytic talking, as well as the versions of self and language we encounter in our therapeutic work.

This program is intended to help fulfill licensure renewal requirements for continuing education in diversity and cultural competence. However, registrants should check with their licensing board if uncertain.

Group psychotherapy can be a life-changing experience, offering relational experiences critical to the process of healing, growth and transformation, and psychodrama experienced in a group format Is perhaps the most powerful and effective modality in our therapeutic repertoire. Working with Survivor Siblings in Psychoanalysis: Ability and Disability in Clinical Process explores a previously neglected area in the field of psychoanalysis, addressing undertheorized concepts on siblings, disabilities and psychic survivorship, and broadening our conceptualization of the enduring effects of lateral relations on human development. What happens to a person’s sense of self both personally and professionally when they grow up alongside a severely disabled sibling? This presentation will explore the themes that emerged in the book through a series of qualitative interviews held between the author and a sample of psychoanalysts-- all of whom grew up alongside a disabled sibling.

"CREATIVE APPROACHES TO TRAUMA PROCESSING AND RESILIENCE-BUILDING IN AN AGE OF MASS TRAUMA II

From school shootings to mass disasters, the past several years have offered no shortage of sudden and shocking events that have disrupted communities. Group therapists are ideally situated to respond to these events, both in the immediate aftermath and throughout the extended period of recovery. This daylong workshop offers training on clinical work in the context of community and shared traumatic events, with a particular emphasis on the use of art-based, experiential, and embodied approaches. Such techniques are particularly useful in establishing safety, promoting self-regulation, and making meaning in the face of events that often defy the use of language.

Topics will include the impact and nature of mass trauma; factors influencing individual and community responses; building resilience within the professional self; distinguishing between acute and long-term intervention; and the incorporation of creative approaches within group and individual modalities. Attendees will engage with both theory and practice, including in vivo demonstration of experiential techniques.

Jennifer “Allison” Bess, Ph.D. has been an advocate for Transgender and Gender Diverse (TGD) individuals since they defended their dissertation in 2006, which was a qualitative study about experiences of TGD individuals in therapy. They are currently a Home Based Primary Care (HBPC) Psychologist with South Texas Veterans Health Care System (STVHCS), where they have worked for 9 years. They have facilitated the Transgender Veterans Group at STVHCS and have conducted mental health evaluations for gender affirming medical treatment there since 2014. They are currently a member of the national Transgender Care Coordination (TCC) Integrated Project Team (IPT), Care Coordination workstream, whose goal is to assess current services in Veterans Health Administration for TGD veterans and to plan, develop, and initiate the gender affirming surgery continuum of care. Dr. Bess also frequently provides consultation and didactic presentations to VA providers and staff regarding gender diversity, working with older LGBTQ+ veterans, minority stress, Neurodiversity, disability justice, and the social determinants of health.

Psychiatric medications can be confusing for psychotherapists and psychoanalysts who have not been educated in psychopharmacology. What are the indications for a psychiatric referral? Why might a psychiatrist prescribe a particular type of medication, or even choose not to prescribe medication at all? This presentation provides an overview of current strategies and trends in prescribinging. It is designed to increase the knowledge of non-prescribing clinicians about medication and to aid in client care and coordination of care. This program will also consider the new horizon of ketamine and other psychedelic therapies.

OBJECTIVES

After attending the program in its entirety, attendees will be able to:

Explain why an antidepressant is not always indicated for depression.
Identity 3 uses of antipsychotics for non-psychotic symptoms.
Describe the downsides of sedative hypnotics.

Presenter

Dr. Catherine Stevenson is a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst in private practice in Houston, Texas. She received psychiatric training at the Menninger Clinic in Topeka, Kansas, moving to Houston to complete her residency as part of the Menninger merger with Baylor College of Medicine. Her psychoanalytic studies, begun at the Topeka Institute for Psychoanalysis, were completed at the Houston-Galveston Psychoanalytic Institute after the move. A former President of the Houston Psychoanalytic Society, Dr. Stevenson is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry at Baylor, where she teaches and supervises residents in psychotherapy. In addition, she is a member of the faculty of the Center for Psychoanalytic Studies.

This intermediate to advanced-level study group will consider the roles of childhood and child development in psychoanalysis from Freud onward, examining how different images about babies evolved and influenced analytic theory and practice. We will integrate infancy research and neuroscience findings with concepts from various models of psychoanalysis (classical, Kleinian, object relations, and relational), considering implications for development and psychotherapeutic process with children and adults. The study group will utilize readings, discussion, and case examples. The group is open to clinicians who have an intermediate grasp of psychoanalytic theory and who work with children, adolescents, and/or adults. Registration is limited to a relatively small number of participants in order to allow time for them to grapple with the ideas and explore their own case material with the group. Participants should obtain a copy of the following textbook: Seligman, S. (2018). Relationships in Development: Infancy, Intersubjectivity, and Attachment. New York: Routledge.

OBJECTIVES

Describe the classical Freudian view of the baby and what motivates human behavior.
Identify 3 core themes and controversies in classical psychoanalytic theory.
Describe how ego psychology and object relations offered different views of the baby from those of classical psychoanalysis.
Explain what is meant by a robust developmental perspective.
Identify some ways that infant research findings contributed to psychoanalytic views of development.
Describe some clinical implications of infancy research.
Describe ways that the relational baby differs from its predecessors.
Identify how gender, sexualities, and the Oedipus complex are viewed in light of developmental intersubjective research findings.
Describe some clinical implications of attachment theory.
Differentiate Kleinian and intersubjective views of projective identification.
Describe how time presents itself to the clinician.
Explain what is meant by forms of vitality.
Describe the analytic mindset as an agent of therapeutic change.
Define dynamic systems theory.

The group will be facilitated by JoAnn Ponder, PhD, a psychologist-psychoanalyst who has a private practice in Austin working with children, adults, couples, and consultees. She completed her postgraduate training in adult psychoanalysis at the Center for Psychoanalytic Studies in Houston, where she currently serves on the faculty. She also completed postgraduate training programs in infant-parent mental health intervention; object relational child, couples, and family therapy; and psychotherapy supervision. She has presented at national and international psychoanalytic conferences. Her publications include a coedited book, book chapters, and journal articles about a variety of developmental and clinical topics including adoptive motherhood, therapy with children who lost parents, and clinical process with adults.

About this virtual workshop:

Socratic questioning is a transtheoretical omnipresent psychotherapeutic process. Effective use of Socratic questioning in session is predictive of symptoms change; this relationship holds even after controlling for the relationship. However, there is some evidence that learning to artfully and competently use Socratic strategies in session is among the hardest skills for a psychotherapist to learn. Of course, Socrates was not a therapist and a pure application of the Socratic Method with a perfect fidelity would not be therapeutic.

This virtual workshop presents a more empathic and collaborative approach to using Socratic strategies in a clinical context; Socratic strategies are integrated with good clinical practices in a manner that is consistent with the evidence-base of what constitutes effective therapy. This workshop presents a framework for teaching clients and therapists how to use Socratic cognitive and behavior change strategies. This framework is based on methods that have proven effective training several thousand frontline public mental health therapists in how to deliver high quality cognitive behavior therapy.

Participants will be taught how to use a four-step framework for Socratic questioning. Collaborative empiricism appropriately describes this process of using collaborative strategies to join with the client in applying scientific curiosity to their thought processes. Participants will learn how to use Socratic questioning strategies both within a single session and consistently across a number of sessions to bring about change in patient schema (i.e., core beliefs). Workshop will focus on applied examples and demonstrations.

Scott H Waltman, PsyD, ABPP, is a clinician, international trainer, and practice-based researcher. His interests include evidence-based psychotherapy practice, training, and implementation in systems that provide care to underserved populations. He is certified as a qualified Cognitive Therapist and Trainer/Consultant by the Academy of Cognitive & Behavioral Therapies. Currently, he works as a clinical psychologist in private practice and a managed care system, where he is a frontline clinician and practice-based researcher.

Objectives:

Based on the content of this workshop, participants will be able to:

Identify key cognitions and behaviors that are optimal targets of Socratic change strategies
Use validation and perspective taking strategies to develop a better understanding of the target cognition and behavior
Use collaborative empiricism and curiosity to create fuller and more balanced perspective
Summarize and synthesize the Socratic dialogue to consolidate learning and create a focus on behavior change

Professor Andrew Samuels

I saw my first client (a better word than ‘patient’) in 1972, so I have been in this field for 49 years. In 2021, I will be 72. I began as a very young man which has led me to question ‘the wisdom of age’, not only in my case! In this talk, I will describe the role of theatre and politics in my work as a Jungian analyst. In this field I am both an insider and an outsider, as I will explain. Both Jungian and, in a way, anti-Jungian. I will show how, in my case as with everyone, formative family experiences deeply influenced my thinking. The way the invitation was framed makes it impossible for me to avoid referring to my book Jung and the Post-Jungians (1985)/Jung e os Pós Junguianos (1989). At the heart of the talk is the creation of a ‘balance sheet’ for Jungian psychology, with columns for profits/strengths and losses/weaknesses. It may make for ugly listening. I will explain the title during the talk.

BIOGRAPHY/RESUME/CV-ANDREW SAMUELS

Andrew Samuels is recognized internationally as one of the foremost political commentators working in the fields of analysis, psychotherapy and depth psychology. He is a pluralist and draws on a wide range of approaches to psyche, including post-Jungian, relational psychoanalytic and humanistic ideas. But he roots his work in people’s lived experience in their family and in society. Andrew is a Training Analyst of the Society of Analytical Psychology, in private practice in London, and was Professor of Analytical Psychology at the University of Essex. He was Chair of the UK Council for Psychotherapy and founded both Psychotherapists and Counsellors for Social Responsibility and the Analysis and Activism movement in the Jungian world. He works as a consultant with political leaders, parties and activist groups in several countries, including the United States. He also consults to Britain’s National Health Service.

Andrew is a frequent visitor to Brasil and several of his books are published in Portuguese: Dicionário Crítico de Análise Junguiana(Editora Imago, 1988), Jung e os Pós Junguianos (1989, Editora Imago), A Psique Plural (1992, Editora Imago), A Psique Política (1995, Editora Imago), and Política no Divâ (2002, Editora Summus).

His many books in English have been translated into 21 languages, and include: Jung and the Post-Jungians (1985); A Critical Dictionary of Jungian Analysis (1986); The Father (1986); Psychopathology (1989); The Plural Psyche (1989); The Political Psyche(1993); Politics on the Couch (2001); Persons, Passions, Psychotherapy, Politics (2014); Relational Psychotherapy, Psychoanalysis and Counselling: Appraisals and Reappraisals (edited with Del Loewenthal, 2014). This presentation will consider the crucial role of imagination in psychoanalytic work, and its relation to therapeutic creativity. We will explore some differences between imagination and fantasy, and examine the ways in which learning to gain increasingly free access to one’s own imaginary realms in the presence of our patients facilitates points of access to our patients’ and our own internal worlds. We will see how expanding our imagination’s reach deepens psychoanalytic work, and allows freer uses of enactment and enhanced access to other transference/countertransference encounters that lead to change, growth and access to unconscious experience for patient and therapist alike. The structure of the evening will include a brief talk, followed by discussion and the application of these ideas to challenging therapeutic moments.

About the Presenter:

Anthony Bass, PhD is an associate professor and consulting supervising analyst at the NYU Postdoctoral Program, and on the faculty, and training and supervising analyst at the Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research. He is a member of the faculty at the Manhattan Institute, ICP, the National Institute for the Psychotherapies National Training Program, the Institute for Relational Psychoanalysis of Philadelphia and the Stephen Mitchell Center for Relational Studies, where he is a founder and president. He is editor emeritus of Psychoanalytic Dialogues, and a founding director of IARPP. He is on the board of the Sandor Ferenczi Center of New York City, and has been a visiting professor at the Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute. He leads clinical study groups and leads workshops throughout the US and Europe.

Colleagues of Philip Bromberg have joined together to offer a program to discuss and celebrate Bromberg’s work. There will be a series of six, monthly, online group discussion meetings, each focused on a single article of Bromberg’s, followed in July by a larger memorial to Bromberg’s life and work (the details of the larger memorial will be announced shortly). All these meetings are accessible to members of all the professional communities across the analytic and trauma worlds who have followed Bromberg’s work over the decades.

Each of the monthly online reading group meetings will be a discussion of a paper selected by the group leader(s), who are all people who Bromberg deeply influenced. These meetings began in February and will continue monthly through July.

Attendance is free. To facilitate discussion, attendance at each group meeting will be limited to 25 people. Due to high demand, please only sign up for one meeting, as available. Each meeting will be announced about one month before it is to take place.

PROCESS: We are doing registration for one session at a time. Sessions further along in the schedule will be open for registration about one month prior to being held. The registration link is appended just below the description of the seminar (see: REGISTRATION) and is for that seminar only.

AGPA Connect

AGPA Connect, is the six day conference of the American Group Psychotherapy Association. AGPA Connect will be virtual this year. The theme is "The Power of Groups in A Challenging World” and how fitting this theme at this time in our lives.There are three different categories of events: Specials Institutes (February 19th), the Institutes (February 13 & 14th), and the Three Day Conference (February 25-27th).

Dr. Aaron Black is one of the Special Institute speakers and the other is Dr. Zindel Segal. Aaron’s area of expertise is attachment theory and its application in individual and group psychotherapy. He is an excellent thinker and clinician. Zindel comes out of Canada and is one of the primary international developers of mindfulness and psychotherapy. He combines a very practical cognitive therapy approach with the practice of mindfulness for anxiety and depression. The approach is very well researched and has outstanding outcome results.

The Institutes are usually a mix of process group experiences and also specific institutes that are theme based. All of the presenters are considered to be the top group leaders in the organization. The two day experience is intense and always a deep learning experience. This experience is also a great way to get to know people in AGPA and friendships have come out of these groups that last a lifetime.

Finally there is the Three-Day Conference with a wide array of workshops, courses, and open sessions. Our own San Antonio colleagues: Susan Mengden, Sharon Bolin, Ashley Powell and Tom Stone will be presenting two different events. The conference events cover just about every topic imaginable.

There are some outstanding plenary speakers. Alexis Abernethy will open the institute to help people feel at home with the virtual format. Elizabeth Ford will discuss her work with incarcerated populations. Bruce Perry, a colleague from Texas, will speak about his work with traumatized children. Dr. Thema Bryant-Davis will help us more deeply understand the effects of racial trauma.

Parasitic Whiteness targets non-white people for domination. It proceeds under the auspices of entitled dominion. It works by creating a fictive community, each of whom feels protected from their individual frailties by participating in this group imagined to be strong. The premise boomerangs. Domination enfeebles the dominator while subjugating the target. All lose. We will make this via personal, clinical and theoretical considerations. We will then take up similar issues while consulting with a local analytic clinician regarding a current case in which race and racism play noticeable parts.

The presentation will be divided into two parts: in the morning we will present Moss’ work on parasitic Whiteness– theoretical and clinical. In the afternoon, we will have a clinical discussion of current process material presented by Asli Baykal, PhD, LCSW, a local analytic clinician.

Bios:

Donald Moss, M.D.— Program Chair of APsaA, Author of 5 books and 60+ articles, with a primary focus on problems of masculinity and structured forms of hatred– racism, homophobia, misogyny. Founding member of Green Gang, a group of analysts and scientists focusing on climate change denial.

Lynne Zeavin, Psy.D.: Dr Lynne Zeavin is a training and supervising analyst at the New York Psychoanalytic Institute where she co-chairs the Diversity Committee and teaches the work of Melanie Klein. An associate editor at JAPA and on the editorial boards of The Psychoanalytic Quarterly and Division/Review, Dr Zeavin writes about gender, sexuality, misogyny and Race, as well as various aspects of Kleinian theory and technique. Along with several colleagues she is a co-founder of the Rita Frankiel Memorial Fellowship sponsored by the Melanie Klein Trust which has offered a subspecialty training in Kleinian analysis for advanced candidates over the last decade. Dr. Zeavin is a member of the program committee of Apsa and a founder of Green Gang, a 4 person psychoanalytic collective engaged in the study of our human relationship with the natural world.

Asli Baykal (PhD, LCSW) is a psychotherapist in private practice in Austin, TX. She obtained her MA in Gender Studies at Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey, and her PhD in anthropology at Boston University, after which she served as professor of cultural anthropology at University of Richmond. She then went back to school for clinical training, obtained an MSW from Boston University and worked as a therapist at a number of non-profits, most recently UT Austin Counseling Center. Asli was a fellow at the American Psychoanalytic Association in 2015-2016. She is currently a fourth-year candidate at Center for Psychoanalytic Studies in Houston, TX.

Map object relations along vertical lines

Remembering Richard Wyrick

Richard Arthur Wyrick, 76, died peacefully the evening of his birthday, May 21, 2020, at his home in San Antonio, Texas. Present at his death was his ex-wife, Beverly Davis.

Richard was born on May 21, 1944, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He was the second child of Mary Thomasine (Keene) Wyrick and Arthur Moore Wyrick. His parents’ hometown was Sherman, Texas, but the family moved numerous times across the United States, as Richard’s father managed numerous retail stores in New Mexico, Ohio, Idaho, Washington and Oregon, before returning home to Sherman to retire.

Richard graduated from high school in Portland, Oregon. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from the honors college of the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon and a master’s degree and doctoral degree in clinical psychology from the University of Arizona in Tucson in 1972.

After working as an assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, Richard took a position as a staff psychologist at the Audie L. Murphy Memorial Veterans Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. He made San Antonio his home and retired in 2017 after 39 years of service to veterans at the VA hospital.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Patricia Pappenhagen. He is survived by a son, David Wyrick, and daughter, Charlotte Wyrick, as well as his nephew, Ronald Pappenhagen, and nieces, Laura Pappenhagen Lazzerini, and Karen Beth Pappenhagen.

Richard was a skilled clinician and teacher, widely respected by staff, colleagues and patients for his insights and dedication to his work and the profession of clinical psychology. He was one of the original members of the San Antonio Society for Psychoanalytic Studies and a longtime regular participant in the monthly reading group. He contributed to the reading group’s discussions with wit, warmth, originality and compassion. He is remembered fondly, with great affection and respect, by many former patients, colleagues and friends.

Yearly Activity Summary

April 6, 2017

SASPS continues to play a central role in the education and support for the importance of psychoanalytic theory, and psychoanalytically informed practice in our academic and professional community. Our active membership is a professionally diverse group of approximately 62 registered members. A significantly larger number of mental health professionals regularly attend our meetings and presentations. We are primarily Psychologists, but are well represented with Psychiatrists, Social Workers, and LPCs. A few are certified Psychoanalysts and Jungian Analysts. We have 12 Division members at present. We now have 16 Graduate Student Members in psychology and psychiatry, a significant increase from past years. We continue to expand our working group by appointing new members to committees in order to spread the workload and get more members involved in sustaining the organization. We have an active and diverse board, representing Psychology, Psychiatry, Social Work, Licensed Professional Counselors, and Psychoanalysis, who come from academic, hospital and private practice settings.

We continue to benefit from our close alliance with the Mind Science Foundation which has co sponsored several of our chapter activities and provided publicity and administrative support over the years. We also have alliances with other community organizations, which help support our Continuing Education offerings this year, including The University of the Incarnate Word, and Trinity University, and the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. Our society maintains a sound financial foundation, in part though our affiliation with, and support from local universities and community agencies.

We have benefited from an organizational consultant who provides ongoing consultation regarding clarification of goals, diversifying leadership responsibilities, delegation of event planning, defining needs for administrative support, and upgrading our website.

Our website is up to date, user friendly, and serves a number of our functions for member information, workshop registration, and communication. This has a significant positive impact on the efficiency of our event planning.

The Education Committee planned several professional and community educational offerings this past year. Our activities include:

(1) Our monthly Psychoanalytic Study Group, led by local members, continues to meet in our homes, and reviews mostly contemporary psychoanalytic literature. The group continues to draw approximately 15-25 members from a diverse group of mental health professionals and students, representing psychology, psychiatry, social work, psychoanalysis, and others interested in psychoanalytic ideas and their application to clinical theory and practice. Current topics have continued to focus on Relational, Self Psychology, Gender, Diversity, and historical Psychoanalytic Perspectives. We continue to send out our Newsletter electronically to a large number of our current and past members and attendees, which sustains interest and attendance.
(2) For our Spring workshop on May 16, 2016 we sponsored a workshop by Jerry Gans MD on the topics of “Recognizing Shame and Acknowledging Courage in Group Psychotherapy” and “Money Matters in Psychotherapy”, conducted in a group process format which was innovative and productive.

(3) For our annual Paredes Lecture on October 7th, focused on community outreach, We presented a workshop on “Restorative Justice: Bursting the School to Prison Pipeline” with presentations by Juvenile Court Judge Laura Parker, Phillip Carney, Coordinator of Restorative Discipline NEISD, who developed a model program used in a local school district, and Anne Thomas, Ph.D., Deputy Chief of Clinical Services for the Bexar County Juvenile Probation Department. This brought in attendees within the educational, juvenile justice, and mental health communities for an informative exchange of ideas about new innovations in the management of juvenile offenders.

(4) For our Fall Workshop on November 11, we invited Neil Altman, PhD to present a presentation on “Race, Class and Culture in Psychoanalysis” followed by a Consultation with Dr Altman the next day. A useful and informative discussion of the conscious and unconscious influences of these influences on the practice of psychoanalytically informed psychotherapy.

(5) On May 19 of this year, SASPS and the Mind Science Foundation will cosponsor a workshop entitled “From Self to Selfies: reflection on the Impact of Technological Change on the Psychology of the Self” presented by SASPS members Cynthia Diaz de Leon, PhD., Joshua Essery, PsyD, ABPP, Paul Ingmundson, Ph.D, and Thomas Stone, Ph.D

(6) On September 15, 2017 we plan to invite Ricardo Ainslie, Ph.D to present and discuss his documentary “The Mark of War” and intimate portrait of men who served in the Vietnam war.

(7) On November 4, 2017 Melanie Suchet will present on Therapeutic Impasse and Race

(8) We are in the planning for reviving our Film Society later this summer, with a film presentation of “The Danish Girl” to facilitate awareness and discussion of transgender issues.

In other ongoing activities, several of our members continue to teach in both the Psychology and Psychiatry Residency Program at UTHSCSA, and function as co-leaders in seminars, and providing psychodynamic psychotherapy supervision.

Our Psychodynamic Track in the Clinical Psychology Training Program continues to provide an internship such that Psychology Residents are afforded many more opportunities for a specific focus on psychodynamic approaches to a broad range of clinical problems, within a Generalist model of training. We have involved several psychodynamic psychologists from our group who have Clinical Appointments at UTHSCSA to supervise our Residents. The Track system has provided considerable improvement in the recruitment of interns,

In summary, our organization continues to grow, with increasing membership, more diverse offerings, and more student involvement, and more administrative efficiency. There’s increasing interest in Division activities, including attendance at Spring Meetings.

Since the invention of the telegraph, the construction of the self has been determined in significant ways by technological advances that now occur more rapidly than ever before. As mental health professionals, we are affected both personally and professionally by the pervasiveness of technology in our lives and the lives of our clients. This workshop will be an opportunity for us to take time out from being deeply immersed in our technologically driven life and reflect on contemporary views of the psychology of the self. Psychoanalysis provides us, regardless of our clinical orientation, with the tools to make sense out of this evolving sense of self. Through lectures, videos, small and large group discussion, we will provide a structure out of which all of us will be able to reflect upon and discuss this timely topic.

Spring Workshop: The Party's Over: Relational and Ethical Perspectives on Therapeutic Termination

The San Antonio Society for Psychoanalytic Studies brings a panel of three distinguished psychotherapists to our community to share their views and experiences in what we learn in the termination process, when the therapeutic relationship reaches an end. This workshop provides 3.5 hours of CEUs for mental health professionals, meeting the requirements for training in professional ethics. Professional development and continuing education hours approved by SASPS are recognized as meeting the requirements for psychologists, licensed psychological associates, licensed professional counselors, licensed marriage and family therapists and licensed social workers (Texas State Board of Social Worker Examiners Provider #6590) in the State of Texas.

Cost = $50 for SASPS members, $60 for non-members, $20 for students.
